Analytic combinatory calculi and the elimination of transitivity
نویسنده
چکیده
We introduce, in a general setting, an “analytic” version of standard equational calculi of combinatory logic. Analyticity lies on the one side in the fact that these calculi are characterized by the presence of combinatory introduction rules in place of combinatory axioms, and on the other side in that the transitivity rule proves to be eliminable. Apart from consistency, which follows immediately, we discuss other almost direct consequences of analyticity and the main transitivity elimination theorem; in particular the Church-Rosser and the leftmost reduction theorems for the associated notions of reduction. The last two sections deal with analytic combinatory calculi with the extensionality rule added. Here, as far as the elimination of transitivity is concerned, we have only partial results, which unfortunately do not cover, at present, full CL+Ext . Yet, they are sufficient to prove the decidability of weaker combinatory calculi with extensionality, including e.g. BCK + Ext .

A solution to Curry and Hindley's problem on combinatory strong reduction
It has often been remarked that the metatheory of strong reduction , the combinatory analogue of βη-reduction βη in λ -calculus, is rather complicated. In particular, although the confluence of is an easy consequence of βη being confluent, no direct proof of this fact is known. Curry and Hindley’s problem, dating back to 1958, asks for a self-contained proof of the confluence of , one which mak...
متن کاملCombinatory Logic and - Calculus for Classical Logic
Since Gri n's work in 1990, classical logic has been an attractive target for extracting computational contents. However, the classical principle used in Gri n's type system is the double-negation-elimination rule, which prevents one to analyze the intuitionistic part and the purely classical part separately. By formulating a calculus with J (for the elimination rule of falsehood) and P (for Pe...
متن کاملAxiomatic and Tableau-Based Reasoning for Kt(H, R)
We introduce a tense logic, called Kt(H,R), arising from logics for spatial reasoning. Kt(H,R) is a multi-modal logic with two modalities and their converses defined with respect to a pre-order and a relation stable over this pre-order. We show Kt(H,R) is decidable, it has the effective finite model property and reasoning in Kt(H,R) is PSPACE-complete. Two complete Hilbert-style axiomatisations...
متن کاملContraction-free sequent calculi for geometric theories with an application to Barr's theorem
Geometric theories are presented as contractionand cut-free systems of sequent calculi with mathematical rules following a prescribed rule-scheme that extends the scheme given in Negri and von Plato (1998). Examples include cut-free calculi for Robinson arithmetic and real closed fields. As an immediate consequence of cut elimination, it is shown that if a geometric implication is classically d...
متن کاملCorrectness of Copy in Calculi with Letrec, Case and Constructors
Call-by-need lambda calculi with letrec provide a rewritingbased operational semantics for (lazy) call-by-name functional languages. These calculi model the sharing behavior during evaluation more closely than let-based calculi that use a fixpoint combinator. In a previous paper we showed that the copy-transformation is correct for the small calculus LRλ. In this paper we demonstrate that the p...
